I write this piece as the follow-up to the one I wrote earlier in the week.  After the last bout of fall primary races, I can say that the voters agreed with my sentiment.  By choosing Christine O’Donnell in Delaware and Carl Paladino in New York as their Republican candidate – those voters stated that the status quo is not good enough.
I read the Washington Post as my primary source of news coverage and the liberal reporters just don’t get it.  They have quickly grasped on to the opinion that by voting for more traditionally conservative candidates like O’Donnell in Delaware and Angle out in Nevada that the Tea Party has actually hurt the Republican chances.  What they don’t get is that the Tea Party movement is about principle, not about political gamesmanship and who has the majority.
Americans at large are fed up with the status-quo.  We are still a center-right nation on the political spectrum.  People of various conservatives ideologies have aligned under the loose conglomeration and title of the Tea Party.  We are not just the far right as the media portrays us.  We recognize that the status-quo is not good enough and we are nominating and electing people who truly believe that.  They are not beholden to party, hierarchy, or special interests.  They are beholden to principle and their constituents.
That is it – their stance really is that simple.
Such voters and officials believe that hard decisions have to be made to leave our children a better nation, not the shell of one – which we will have if we continue on the course we are on.  To do so takes a true belief in democracy – which means the voter elects the best candidate, not necessarily the most electable, well-funded, or well-heeled representative.
The Tea Party goes against the commonly-held notion of what or who a politician has to be because unlike any other group, they see the road to ruin that we are on by picking the same ‘company men’.  The traditional GOP leaership likes us because we revile Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, but fears us because we see that they really are a poor alternative and we are doing something about it against their interests of retaining power.  We are putting up people who have the political will to do the heavy lifting and make hard, unpopular decisions to right this country.
Hence, the Christine O’Donnells of the world.  I trust her, Rand Paul, Ken Buck, Sharron Angle, Joe Miller, and all of the Tea Partiers who may get elected even if they are imperfect.  They sure are better than what we collectively have now.
That collective is what has given us years of pathetic leadership at the federal level exemplified by one turd of a bill after another.  This is not a swipe at the recent Democratic leadership either even though it is especially terrible in the form of toothless financial reform and un-constitutional health care bills.  No Child Left Behind, The Patriot Act, the Gramm-Leach-Billey Act (repeal of Glass-Steagall), are all earlier examples of terrible legislation that has made this country less free and prosperous.
If we elect enough conservatives who hold to The Constitution and aren’t bought and sold by specials interests like cattle, they can form a voting block that has to be dealth with on every issue.  I’m not saying that they can’t compromise, what I am saying is that they can prevent the worst of laws that happen because we have accepted the status quo and possibly sponsor some real legislation that can solve our country’s problems, not make them worse.  We have to look at the long term and differentiate between who really has our best interests in mind and who just wants to stay in power.
